Phase Forms is a 75-minute audiovisual performance by Manabe Daito, built on intricately constructed mathematical polyrhythms that seamlessly and experimentally blend a wide range of musical genres, including ambient, noise, glitch, footwork, hip-hop, drum and bass, jungle, and techno.
Based on pre-composed music and visuals, the performance unfolds in real time with layered live effects. The sound and visuals are precisely synchronized, incorporating generative art, real-time processing, and rhythmic structures and sonic treatments generated through complex algorithms and AI techniques. These elements allow the piece to move fluidly between structured composition and real-time improvisation, creating a dynamic and evolving sensory experience.
Phase Forms has been presented in cities such as Barcelona, Milan, and New York, with each performance adapted to the unique spatial and acoustic conditions of the venue. At Sónar Barcelona, the piece was expanded with lighting, strobes, and laser visuals by 2bit and Kosaku Namikawa, creating a fully synchronized and immersive environment where sound, image, and light converge in real time.
The project features visual direction by Satoshi Horii of Rhizomatiks (Visual Artist). Working closely with Manabe, the team constructs an interactive and immersive audiovisual world in which music and imagery continuously influence and reshape one another.
Phase Forms is designed to be presented in a range of formats—from full-scale festival productions with lighting and laser systems, to more compact and modular setups—allowing the piece to adapt fluidly to diverse venues and contexts worldwide.
